A few months ago, Dean Athanasia, president of consumer & small business at Bank of America, said his goal for the bank was to drive sales from digital channels up to 50% over the next 18 months. However, the bank has not made significant progress towards that goal yet.
According to its 3Q earnings for the year, released today, the bank revealed that 23% of its sales came from digital channels, with 52% of that number coming from the online channel, aka desktop, and 48% from mobile.
That’s a minor improvement from last quarter when Athanasia first laid out that lofty goal. At that time, the sales from digital channels were 22%, according to today’s earnings presentation.
But that’s not to say that the bank’s overall digital efforts are not paying off — quite the contrary. From launching a virtual assistant to P2P payments Zelle and constantly updating mobile features like digital appointments and digital deposit, Bank of America has made a number of additions to its digital offerings, and not to mention an average investment of $75 million per quarter to this cause.
For starters, the bank disclosed an impressive 10% YOY increase in its mobile growth to 25.9 million mobile users and 36.2 million digital users overall. As for its virtual assistant Erica, which probably added to BofA’s increased mobile numbers, it revealed 3.4 million users since its launch earlier this year.
And when it comes to payments, BofA saw a 139% jump in its Zelle users, with over 42.5 million users compared with 17.8 million in the same quarter last year. It processed over $12 billion in transaction volume during this quarter, compared to $6 billion in the same quarter last year.
Aside from P2P, the bank also saw a noticeable increase in digital deposits (mobile and ATMs) to 77%, the remaining 23% of deposits came from financial centers.
Over the next quarter, BofA will continue adding to its digital front and improve existing products and services. Last week Michelle Moore, head of digital banking at BofA, reiterated this sentiment, talking about some upcoming improvements to Erica.
BofA is also working innovation on the Merrill Lynch side of things as well. The bank just announced a mobile feature allowing Merrill Lynch clients to move seamlessly between Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, Merrill Edge (its roboadvisor, also launched this year), and U.S. Trust mobile apps without having to re-authenticate.
For the quarter ended September 30, the bank announced $22.8 billion in net revenue, compared with $21.8 billion in the same quarter last year, a 4.6% increase.
