JPMorgan Chase Widens Lead as Mobile Banking Leader

JPMorgan Ch ase & Co. saw steady increases in active mobile and digital users, according to its 3Q18 earnings report released Friday. It remains the leader among the largest consumer banks in the U.S. in both digital and mobile users by millions of customers. The bank's 32.6 million active mobile customers who logged into mobile platforms within the previous 90 days was up 3% from the 31.7 million active users reported in 2Q18 and up 11% from the 29.3 million active users reported in the third quarter of last year. Meanwhile, the 48.7 million active digital customers who logged into web and/or mobile platforms within the previous 90 days was up 1% from the 48 million active users reported in 2Q18 and up 5% from the 46.3 million active users reported in the third quarter of last year. Chase’s 32.6 million active mobile users represent about 67% of the total active digital users in 3Q18. That’s up from the 29.3 million active mobile users who represented about 63% of the total active digital users reported in the corresponding quarter last year. While digital and mobile usage is up, and digital-to-mobile penetration is on the rise, Chase’s branch network continued its decline. The 5,066 branches as of 3Q18 is down 2% from the 5,174 in the corresponding quarter last year. Despite this contraction, Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon said in a statement released with the earnings report that Chase is looking forward to expanding into new markets. We are extremely excited to be expanding again, as smart regulatory policy and a competitive corporate tax system help us to deliver on our commitment to invest in our customers and communities. We just opened our first branch in Washington, D.C., which is one of hundreds of new branches that we will be opening in new markets, including Philadelphia and Boston. And every time we open branches in a new market, we bring the full force of JPMorgan Chase to that community. Additionally, as indicated in the earnings report, Chase’s consumer and community banking unit drew in record net new money while the bank saw double-digit growth in card sales and merchant-processing volume. In the earnings conference call on Friday, Chief Financial Officer Marianne Lake said consumer and community banking expenses of $7 billion represented a 7% increase, driven by continued investments in technology as well as auto lease depreciation. Asked by analysts for Chase’s sense of competition for deposit base and pricing, particularly in core retail banking, Lake offered the following: “When we think about the deposit base and the retail consumer relationship, deposits and rate paid is a important part of it, but it’s increasingly less important, not that it’s not significant. And so, when you think about the value that we give to our customers, it’s not just that but it’s also all of the customer experience initiatives that we’ve had, it’s about convenience, about digital mobile capabilities, it’s about launching new products, new services, simplifying the environment for them.” Other major banks sharing their third-quarter numbers on digital and mobile users have also shown gains, particularly when it comes to mobile banking. Citigroup Inc. reported 18 million active digital users in North America in 3Q18, up 1% from 17.8 million the previous quarter and up 5% from 17.1 million in the third quarter of last year. Its 10.4 million active mobile users in North America this quarter is up 3% over the previous quarter and up 13% from 9.2 million in the third quarter of last year. Meanwhile, Wells Fargo & Co. reported 29 million active digital (online and mobile) users in 3Q18, up only slightly from 28.9 million the previous quarter but up 4% from 27.8 million in the third quarter of last year. Bank of America Corp. once again posted year-over-year gains in digital and mobile banking, according to its 3Q18 earnings report released Monday. The bank's 36.2 million digital banking users, including 25.9 million mobile banking users, represented an impressive climb from the 34.5 million digital users and 23.6 million mobile users reported in the third quarter of last year. The addition of 2.3 million mobile users over the past year but just 1.7 million overall digital users would indicate more existing and new users alike are making use of the bank's mobile services. Of $698 billion in total payments in the bank's consumer business for 3Q18, $375 billion were digital and $323 billion were non-digital, representing an 11% climb for digital transactions but just 1% for non-digital transactions from a year before. The 42.5 million P2P transactions worth $12 billion dollars processed through Zelle and Bank of America in 3Q18 represented a significant increase from the 17.8 million transactions worth $6 billion a year before.
