Citi has appointed former Google Vice President Brian Saluzzo as chief information officer.

“The technology and business enablement team is proud to play a foundational role in Citi’s strategy, and I’m confident in our team’s ability to help us differentiate and win,” Tim Ryan, head of technology and business enablement at Citi, told FinAi News. Saluzzo’s “arrival as CIO positions us well to accelerate that work and continue building for the future.”

Saluzzo, who had been at Google since July 2022, previously worked at American Express and Goldman Sachs, according to his LinkedIn profile.

“As our CIO, he is joining at a pivotal time as we continue to optimize technology and leverage AI across the firm to deliver safe, secure and best-in-class solutions for our clients,” Ryan said in a LinkedIn post today.

In the first quarter, Citi’s tech spend was $2.3 billion, and the bank continues to invest in AI across operations, according to previous FinAi News reporting.

Most recently, the $1.7 trillion bank announced AI-driven wealth tech solution Citi Sky.

FIs hire big tech talent

Citi is not the only major FI that is tapping big tech talent to lead AI and other initiatives.

“I’ve seen even the big banks are now bringing in talent from large tech,” Prageeth Sandakalum, executive director of product management at Wells Fargo, and former vice president and principal product manager for digital, data and AI at U.S. Bank, said in March at the FinAi Banking Summit.

Other FIs that have recently hired from tech giants include:

  • State Street, which in March named Manoj Bohra as chief data and AI officer from Google Cloud;
  • Wells Fargo, which in January hired Faraz Shafiq, a former Amazon Web Services executive, to lead its AI product strategy;
  • Truist, which in November 2025, hired Pascal Belaud as its chief AI and data officer from Microsoft;
  •  Goldman Sachs, which in October 2025 hired Melissa Goldman as global head of technology, engineering for global banking and markets from Google; and
  • Capital One, which in June 2024 hired Milind Naphade from Nvidia to serve as the bank’s senior vice president of technology and head of Capital One’s AI Foundations organization.

Register here for the FinAi Lending Summit, set for Oct. 7-8 in Las Vegas.
