JPMorgan Chase took the number one spot in customer service in J.D. Power’s annual National Banking Satisfaction Study, beating last year’s winner PNC Bank by a few points, but the rest of the contenders stayed in the same place as last year.
The report, released yesterday, took into account convenience, seamless digital offerings, UX, strong checking account and credit card offerings. The report asked respondents to rank how well they thought their bank was at preventing and resolving customer problems evaluating customer experience in six areas: channel interactions, deposit accounts, credit accounts, investment accounts, convenience, and problem resolution.
Of course, customer satisfaction in the digital channels (mobile and online), played a role in this ranking. Earlier this summer, J.D. Power released a report ranking mobile customer satisfaction for the nation’s top retail banks. In this report, Chase ranked third, preceded by USAA Bank and Capital One.
This most recent survey ranges over six U.S. banks that account for 44% of total domestic deposits. These banks include JPMorgan Chase, PNC Bank, U.S. Bank, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citi. Chase scored 854 out of 1,000 points. The rest of the banks were only a few points behind, with the industry average coming out to 832.
Bank of America, one of the largest retail banks in the country, scored below this average score at 824, while Wells Fargo and Citi scored still lower, at 819 and 811 respectively.
Comparing the 2018 report to last year’s report, not much has changed. Last year, PNC ranked first with 855 points, while Chase was just a point away in second place. U.S. Bank maintains its position at the third rank for two years straight.

Bob Neuhaus, Financial Services Consultant at J.D. Power, said in a statement yesterday:
The core value proposition for the largest retail banks is delivering a consistent customer experience anywhere, anytime—and across all interaction channels. As we dig into the results, it becomes clear that consistency, above all else, is what sets the top performers apart from the pack. Whether it’s through a credit card, a branch or a mobile banking interaction, national bank customers are most satisfied when they can rely on their bank for a consistent multi-channel experience.
