3 Money Management Startups to Watch

The expectation for P2P payment apps is more than just payments.

As the U.S. market gets saturated with various P2P apps, consumers are demanding that Venmo or Apple Pay or whatever platform they are using provide them with some money-management capabilities as well. Even at major fintech conferences such as Finovate in Santa Clara, Calif., two weeks ago, there has been an increased focus on the money management market. Even larger banks are launching products and services in this area. To meet this market demand, some banks are buying money management focused fintechs. Take, for instance, Goldman Sachs’s purchase of Clarity Money in April. And other banks such as Bank of America with Erica or Wells Fargo with Greenhouse are building in-house capabilities to meet customers needs.

Here are three money management (or PFM) startups to watch this month.

Moneyamigo: Founded in 2016 by CEO Kim Norland, Moneyamigo went live earlier this month at Finovate in Santa Clara, Calif. It is an interesting blend of B2C payments, PFM capabilities, and a credit card. The company is based in Henderson, Nev. It has raised $1.7 million and has a partnership with Visa to issue its credit cards. Some of its other partners include Metropolitan Commercial Bank and FirstView. What makes MoneyAmigo most interesting is that it combines fintech with insuretech. Once signed up to use Moneyamigo, the consumer is given access to its “telemedicine” platform called Amigohealth. This serves as a direct-to-consumer marketplace of doctors and dentists that a user can set up appointments with, make payments to or order prescription medication. The Moneyamigo app has four tiers of offerings, the most basic of which is free and includes a checking account and up to three Visa credit cards. The highest offering, which includes the health feature, costs $149.99 per year ($12.49/month) and includes no co-pay or deductible for the service, the company says.

Spave – Founded by former U.S. Bank executive Susan Langer in 2016, Spave is a crossbreed between a PFM and a savings app. The startup is currently a part of the Queen City Fintech accelerator in Charlotte, N.C. It has raised an amount less than $500,000 through the accelerator program, along with some other unnamed investors. The app requires users to link her bank accounts and allocate a certain percent of spending to a savings account. The app also provides the user with the option to donate to a list of NGOs and charities within the Spave app (Hello tax deductions.) On the backend, in order to provide spend-related savings, the app will have partnerships with various merchants. Based in Red Wing, Minn., Spave, according to its website, is described as “a women-owned #fintech company,” that targets millennials. It is currently in beta testing and is expected to go live after June this year.

Spiir – Although Spiir is technically not a new startup, having been founded in 2011, last week the PFM firm announced a partnership with Danske Bank, one the largest banks in Denmark, which makes it reborn. Together the two companies will build a new set of features and offerings, and that puts them on our list this month. Two weeks ago, Danske Bank announced that it had made a multi-million dollar investment in the PFM company, which makes it one of Spiir’s largest investors as well as its partner. The investment comes as a result of the PSD2 regulations that went live in Europe in January, Lars Malmberg, head of commercial excellence in group development at Danske Bank, told Bank Innovation. The goal of this investment is to create an app that can be used across the entire Nordic region, not just Denmark.“Spiir is an up-and-running app and solution,” Malmberg said. “The new features are going to be announced on our own mobile app. First, the goal is to implement it in all Nordic markets and then to build on top of this platform different ways people can transact across the Nordic region.” These transactions, Malmberg explained, will include saving tools, P2P transaction capabilities, as well as P2C ones. There is no set date for when Danske plans on launching this product with Spiir. Malmberg could not disclose a timeline. “The hope is in the next few years to take it to the other Nordic markets, and hopefully bring on board two or three other digital investors,” he said. “There’s a lot of opportunities and we want to take advantage of that.”
