Lead Widens for JPMorgan Chase in Race for Mobile Banking Users

JPMorgan Chase leads the race for the most mobile users among the top three largest consumer banks in the U.S. — still.

With 31.6 million active mobile users, JPMorgan Chase is well ahead of Bank of America’s 25.3 million active mobile users for 2Q18. In the same period, Wells Fargo reported 22 million and Citigroup 10 million. Chase’s lead is all the more impressive when FDIC data is taken into account. For 1Q18, the most recent available, the FDIC reported 51.1 million deposit accounts for Chase, and 67.4 million for Bank of America. Wells Fargo came in with 75.6 million, and Citi with 21.3 million.

JPMorgan Chase Bank of America Wells Fargo Citigroup
Mobile Users 31.6 25.3 22 10
Deposit Accounts 51.1 67.4 75.6 21.3
% of Mobile Users 61.8% 37.5% 29.1% 46.9%

And while these banks have consistently reported an increase in both their digital users and mobile users, the year-over-year growth rate is not as impressive as one would imagine, especially given that all four banks have numerous digital innovation and growth initiatives underway.

JPMorgan Chase:

In Q1 this year, JPMorgan Chase had 30.9 million mobile users. Considering this quarter’s 31.6, that represents less than a 2.5% increase. The YOY increase for JPMorgan Chase’s MAU is the most impressive of the lot at 11.2%. The bank reported total digital users (online and mobile) to be 47.9 million.

Bank of America:

Even by adding features such as virtual assistant Erica to its mobile app, BofA managed to see only a 2% increase in mobile users from the last quarter. This quarter, the bank said it had 25.3 million users, and last quarter it had 24.8 million users. However, YOY this bank saw a 10.4% growth rate. The bank reported its total digital users of 35.7 million. In its earnings call today, BofA revealed that Erica currently has 2 million users; it was launched a few months ago.

Wells Fargo:
Wells Fargo, which reported earnings last week, showed the least improvement since last quarter. Wells reported 22 million users this quarter, slightly up from 21.8 million last quarter. Wells Fargo’s YOY growth of 7.8% was also the least among the banks, with 20.4 million in the same quarter last year.

Citigroup:

Citigroup, which reported earnings last week, said it had 18 million digital users, of which 10 million were mobile users. There was no change in either the number of digital or mobile users from the first quarter of this year. The bank’s YOY growth rate, however, has improved to 10 million from 8.4 million. According to Bank Innovation’s database, Citi has historically had the least number of mobile users among the top banks.

Among these banks, BofA, Citi, and Chase all reported an uptick in their revenue. That is, except for Wells Fargo, which reported a 2.7% drop in revenue to $21.6 billion in 2Q18 from $22.2 billion in the same quarter last year.
