Interactive Brokers is ramping up its use of AI across both internal operations and client-facing tools.

“Expanding the use of AI remains a priority across the firm,” Nancy Stuebe, director of investment relations at Interactive Brokers (IBKR), said during the company’s first-quarter earnings call on April 21.

In the past year, the online brokerage has rolled out these AI features:

  • Investment Themes & Connections, which uses AI to analyze market data and identify relationships between companies, sectors and macro trends, helping clients discover investment ideas and understand how different securities are linked.
  • AI-enhanced Market Screeners & News Summaries, which integrates AI into screeners, watchlists and news to surface relevant insights, filter opportunities and summarize large volumes of information quickly.
  • Ask IBKR, a conversational gen AI-driven chatbot that allows clients to query their portfolios. Users can ask questions about the portfolio’s sector-specific exposure and performance as well as get contextual answers based on account data. The chatbot handles a growing share of customer inquiries in multiple languages, improving response times and freeing employees to focus on complex issues, Stuebe said.
  • AI-driven research and content summarization, which aggregates and summarizes content from multiple authorized news sources, helping clients digest market-moving information faster.
  • AI in onboarding and compliance, which reduces manual effort and improves processing speed.

Q1 EARNINGS NUMBERS

In Q1, Interactive Brokers announced:

  • Net interest income of $904 million, up 17% year over year;
  • Net revenue of $1.67 billion, up 16.7% YoY; and
  • Active customers of 4.75 million, up 31%.

In December, Interactive Brokers applied for a U.S. bank charter, signaling a push into traditional banking services in addition to its brokerage business.

The move would allow the firm to expand deposit-taking capabilities and strengthen its balance sheet, while giving it more control over client cash and lending products, according to FinAi News’ prior coverage.

The company did not provide an update on the state of the charter application in the earnings call.
