Square looks to replicate Cash App success with SMBs

Square is looking to replicate the success it has seen with consumers through its Cash App for small businesses. In response to a question during Square’s second-quarter earnings call about creating a digital wallet tying together Square’s varied financial products, Square CEO Jack Dorsey said, “It’s a great idea.” “All these tools connected in the right way will mirror, I believe, what we have been able to do with the Cash App, but also for sellers,” Dorsey said. San Francisco-based Square is known for its payment processing terminals for small businesses. The company also offers the Square Card, which allows SMBs to store and spend money, as well as loans through Square Capital. If the company were to tie these products together through a digital wallet, it would resemble for SMBs what Cash App, which started as a peer-to-peer network before becoming a full-on neobank, has become for consumers. Cash App, for its part, has experienced steady growth, hitting 30 million monthly active users with average monthly transactions per customer at more than 15, a 50% year-over-year increase. Cash Card, the associated debit card, hit 7 million monthly active users. In total, Cash App customers have more than $1.7 billion stored in their accounts this quarter, up 86% from the first quarter. Cash Card saw its average spend increase by nearly 50%, quarter over quarter. “In terms of demographics, we continue to see strong growth from folks under 35,” Dorsey said about Cash App. “In terms of geography, Cash App continues to have a strong presence in the South, but has also seen growing traction in the Midwest and both on the East and West Coast.” Square has upgraded its contactless payment options to accommodate social distancing. Square Online Checkout launched this year to help brick-and-mortar businesses transition to digital channels and, according to the company, payment volume through online channels made up 25% of all seller gross processing volume. “Our online strategy includes a variety of channels that serve sellers of all types and sizes, connecting them with buyers through web and mobile,” said Amrita Ahuja, chief financial officer at Square.
