Massachusetts to Sue Equifax for Data Breach

Equifax is likely to face a lawsuit from Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey, who said Tuesday that she plans to file a lawsuit against the credit rating agency over a data breach that’s compromised  the personal information of the state’s residents.

On Tuesday, Haley filed a notice of intent to sue the Atlanta-based Equifax for not protecting the personal data of over 3 million Massachusetts residents.

According to the Boston Herald, Haley referred to Equifax’s breach as “maybe the most brazen failure to protect consumer data.”

Last week, Equifax announced that 143 million American Social Security numbers and other sensitive data were hacked, in what is now one of the largest data breaches in history. According to its website, Equifax handles data on more than 820 million consumers as well as more than 91 million businesses worldwide, and manages a database with employee information from more than 7,100 employers.
