JPMorgan Chase & Co. reported a double-digit percentage rise in active digital users and active mobile users this quarter, according to the 2Q’18 earnings call today. The bank’s digital to mobile penetration rate, however, is not as impressive.
For instance, take a look at the bank’s active digital users, which at 47,952 this quarter showed a 12% YOY growth rate compared with 45,463 in the corresponding quarter last year. That’s a strong double-digit increase, but the same cannot be said for its digital-to-mobile penetration rate, which has increased only by single digits over the past few quarters.
Chase posted 31,651 active mobile users in its 2Q’18 earnings call today, and considering its total active digital users, that puts its digital to mobile penetration rate at 66%. In 2Q’17, the digital-to-mobile penetration rate was 65%, so that’s only a 1% increase YOY.
Perhaps, the bank’s digital-only neobank Finn will help improve that pace. Finn, which went live nationwide only a few weeks ago, is JPMorgan Chase’s mobile-only bank geared towards digital savvy, millennial audience.
During the earnings call today, Marianne Lake, CFO at JPMorgan Chase, did not provide much information on Finn, pointing out that it is “still very nascent.” She did, however, say that the app has received a high net-promoter score signaling a good user experience, so far. However, the exact score was not disclosed. The app is currently available on iOS.
Chase unveiled Finn last October, beginning in St. Louis. Now it is available in all 50 states. Finn offers debit cards, no-fee checking & savings accounts, PFM capabilities as well as the banks-backed P2P service Zelle. Finn customers can use Chase ATMs as well as the bank’s partner ATMs for debit card withdrawals.
During the earnings call, Lake said that during the year’s two quarters, the bank had spent $844 million on investment in technology and banking coverage. The bank will continue to invest in digital and technological innovations throughout the year, she said.
When it comes to the active digital users, JPMorgan Chase has consistently beaten the other large banks like Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citi Group, leading with the most digital and mobile users. Bank of America, which typically comes in second to Chase, reported 25 million active mobile users in May.
For this second quarter ended in June 30, 2018, JPMorgan Chase reported a net income of $8.3 billion up 18.23% from $7.02 billion in the same quarter last year.
