Glint Pay launched its gold trading and payment platform in the U.S. this week, part of the startup’s international expansion plans rolling out this year.

Glint, based in London, offers users two separate bank accounts, one for fiat currency and one for gold. Users can transfer money between their two accounts in the app and can link a debit card to either account.

Jason Cozens, CEO and founder of Glint, said the company plans to win American consumers over by promoting the stability of the gold standard. “If you look over my lifetime, to have the [British pound] depreciate by 80% shows it’s not a very good currency; no government-issued currencies are,” he said. “Gold always was the ultimate ledger because it couldn’t be messed with.”

After downloading the Glint app, users can transfer money from their existing bank accounts into their Glint account. From there, they can exchange that money for gold or vice versa. The company charges 0.5% to exchange between gold and fiat currency. Users can link a no-fee Mastercard debit card to either their fiat currency or gold accounts, and they can switch between the two at any time.

According to Cozens, unlike digital currencies, which are linked to a token that merely represents gold, Glint users own actual gold in a Swiss bank account. When a customer makes a purchase with the gold-backed debit card, Glint instantly sells enough of the gold to cover the transaction.

Glint Pay users can pay with a debit card linked to gold.

Cozens said Glint works with regulators to ensure compliance. In the U.K., the company received clearance from the Financial Conduct Authority in February 2018 to transfer money electronically. The company insures users’ gold with Lloyd’s of London to meet regulations as well. Sutton Bank in Attica, Ohio backs the Glint bank account in the U.S. and, through it, offers customers FDIC insurance.

In pitching its gold-backed debit card to customers, Glint emphasizes its advantages compared to fiat currencies, including risks relating to inflation, volatility and global financial crises. According to Cozens, Glint will appeal to customers who feel safe buying gold but don’t have a means to pay with it.

Glint initially will market its payment services through investor partners like the Tokyo Commodity Exchange and Sprott, both of which offer precious metal investment. The company is looking into social media marketing to amplify Glint’s outreach to U.S. customers in the near future, but it did not elaborate further on its plans.

Glint’s U.S. operations are based in Boulder, Colo. Six people make up the entire team, including such functions as operations, compliance, customer service, sales and marketing. Since its establishment in 2015, the company has raised more than $18.5 million.

So far, Glint is available in the U.S., U.K. and Europe. Throughout the rest of 2019, the company hopes to expand to Japan, Canada and Scandinavia, and Glint has plans to roll out an international currency exchange tool within the app. The Glint app has been downloaded 50,000 times so far and has seen $50 million in transaction volume, according to the company.

Despite its ambitious plans, Glint faces user hurdles in the U.S., but the company believes it has the potential for mass adoption. “There’s millions of people in the U.S. who already buy gold bars and coins,” Cozens said. “We’re going to make it cool to have gold.”
