Cover Adds Restaurants and Features in App Update

cover_updateCover now “covers” more restaurants — and tells diners more about them.

The app’s 1.1.1 update, released Saturday, now includes more information about the cuisine and atmosphere of participating restaurants, and there are more restaurants in the network.  More than 50 New York restaurants now accept payment through Cover, up from just 22 a few weeks ago. Many more Brooklyn restaurants are included, a further sign, if one was needed, of that borough’s expanding fine dining options.

Cover is about one year old and is currently only available in New York.

Cover aims to bring the Uber experience to fine dining by allowing users to enjoy a meal and then leave without waiting for the check. Seamless offers this experience in the delivery space, and newcomer Dash competes with Cover in the dine-in space, but it seems to be targeting younger, less affluent customers. Dash also allows payments at bars. Tabbed Out offers a similar experience, but requires interaction with the app.

The new Cover app also allows users to bookmark favorite spots. A full-fledged review function for Cover’s elite community can’t be far off. Cover is an iOS-only app.

More invisible payments apps should be expected in the fintech space soon. For those customers affluent enough — or in a big enough hurry — not to worry about checking balances before paying, invisible payments simply offer a better, more elegant experience.

Uber exemplifies this. Cover will need to expand to more cities, with San Francisco being the clear choice, before it can be included in the same company.
