Citigroup‘s digital channels are crucial to growing its new-to-bank customer deposits, according to CFO Mark Mason, who reported single-digit YOY growth in deposits across international retail consumers, as well as North American customers, during the company’s first-quarter earnings report.
“We simplified our deposit account opening process to both new customers and existing cardholders and, at the same time, successfully launched a new digital savings product targeted to customers outside our retail markets,” Mason said in the earnings call today. “Looking across all deposit products, we’ve already seen digital deposit sales in the first quarter of 2019 that are roughly equal to all of last year.”
Based on the first quarter earnings report, Citigroup reported a 3% YOY increase in total international consumer deposits and a 1% increase in U.S. consumer banking deposits. During this quarter, ended March 31, Citigroup reported 19 million active digital users (online and mobile users) and 11 million active mobile users, up 5% and 12% YOY respectively.
“More than two-thirds of new accounts from digital channels are new to our retail bank,” Mason said. “And more than half [of the new accounts] are outside of our branch footprint.”
Citigroup, unlike the other giant banks, has relatively fewer physical branches as a result of its digital-heavy, branch-light approach. Currently, the bank has a little over 2,000 branches globally and 689 branches in the United States. In comparison, Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase have about double that amount of branches.
So, to continue growing new deposits, Citi CEO Michael Corbat said the bank will couple new digital enhancements to its card offerings. Citi’s card business is another leading contributor to bank’s new deposits growth, he said. In the next quarter, Corbat said the bank will add additional digital offerings to Citi’s Thankyou Rewards and Cash Back programs.
Citigroup also reported Q1 revenue of $18.57 billion, which is slightly below analysts’ expectation of $18.63 billion. As of Monday, Citigroup has a market cap of $157.56 billion.
