Accertify combats fraud with ‘AI-native’ response

E-commerce fraud losses to jump 141% from 2024 to 2029

Payments risk management platform Accertify is leaning into AI to fight fraud just as fraudsters themselves are making the most of AI.

Losses tied to e-commerce fraud are projected to surpass $107 billion by 2029, up 141% from $44.3 billion in 2024, according to research firm Juniper Research.

To combat the increasing fraud, Accertify uses multiple machine learning and sequential modeling techniques, with its newest AI technique “based on neural networks so each targets a different type of fraud,” Conrad Kennington, vice president of AI at Accertify, told FinAi News.

“Fraud has become more AI native, and the response is to be AI native too so that you can adapt to those things in real time,” he said.

In addition, Accertify’s automatic review product provides a second look at suspicious activity, reducing manual review queues by up to 70% for some clients, Kennington said.

Protecting agentic shoppers

With agentic commerce on the rise, fraudsters are especially attracted to it because it is relatively new and “gaps in security” exist, Kennington said.

Agentic shoppers “compress the amount of time to an attack vector, and they remove the friction,” he said.

“So, when an AI agent can discover and transact in just a few seconds, there’s less opportunity for human intervention and for secondary verification,” he said. “From a fraudster’s perspective, agentic systems also weaken traditional signals. There’s no typing cadence. There’s no hesitation. There’s no visual confirmation.”

Many of the behavioral cues that fraud-detection systems typically rely on disappear with agentic shopping, making “impersonation easier and accountability harder,” he said.

Protecting agentic shoppers and the businesses deploying them from fraud requires three primary factors, Kennington said, including:

  • Anchoring the identity of an agentic shopper so that it understands the intent of a transaction;
  • Understanding how the intent of a transaction fits within historical data; and
  • Human oversight over the entire cycle of a decision.

Accertify’s partners include Mastercard, American Express, Shopify and FreedomPay, according to the company.
