Truist continued to invest in innovation in 2025 and ranks among the top 300 companies to receive patent approvals from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office – with AI patents helping grow its portfolio.

The $549 billion, Charlotte, N.C.-based bank’s approved patents in 2025 increased 41% year over year to 157, placing it 278th on the 2026 Patent 300 List, published by patent preparation and prosecution law firm Harrity & Harrity.

This 41% increase comes on the heels of the bank’s 960% YoY growth in patents in 2024, according to Fairfax, Va.-based Harrity & Harrity.

YoY patent increase

Bank of America and Truist were the only financial institutions that posted a YoY increase in patents in the latest report, however, Capital One claimed the top spot among financial institutions with 996 granted patents in 2025. The No. 1 spot on the list is held by Consumer Electronics, with 32,599 patents in 2025.

Bank of America, which ranked 59th on the list, had 731 patents approved in 2025, a 6% increase YoY.

Among the bank’s patent portfolio are growing AI and machine learning innovations, a Bank of America spokesperson told FinAi News, noting 18% of the patents granted to the bank in 2025 are AI-related. Additionally, since 2022, the bank has realized a 177% increase in AI and ML patents in its portfolio. AI-focused patents make up 19% of the bank’s total patent portfolio.

Truist also reported this month that AI innovations are increasing, noting nearly half of its patent application filings include AI or machine learning.

AI innovation

One of Bank of America’s 2025 patents was an innovation for Erica, the bank’s AI-driven assistant, the spokesperson said.

That innovation enables systems to update themselves with new data and automates decision-making concerning when and how new models are retrained, the spokesperson said.

One innovation in Truist’s AI portfolio is its Truist Client Pulse, according to a bank spokesperson. The AI-driven tool takes feedback from more than 30 million client interactions and uses that for actionable insights, Michael Springs, senior associate general counsel at Truist, previously told FinAi News.

As of early June, Truist had more than 1,200 approved and filed patents. Bank of America had roughly 8,400 approved patents and pending applications, according to the banks.
