TD Securities has named Chetan Bhat as its head of AI and data technology, tasking him with building out the bank’s AI and data infrastructure across its capital markets businesses.

Bhat will lead the “end-to-end AI and data strategy for TD Securities,” he told FinAi News. This includes pushing adoption of what he termed “high-value data products” across the bank’s Global Markets, Corporate and Investment Banking, and Research businesses.

Bhat, who started his new job Aug. 19, joins TD from JPMorgan Chase where he was managing director of asset and wealth management technology, one of several roles he had during his seven years at the New York-based bank, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Bhat said his priority at Toronto-based TD is a client intelligence and insights initiative that pulls together data across products, services, relationships and interactions, then applies AI to generate “timely, actionable insights” for client-facing staff.

“The goal is simple,” Bhat said. “Help our bankers and senior leaders enter every client conversation better informed — from day-to-day engagement to major client events and executive-level interactions.”

He framed the initiative as a way to deliver near-term business value while laying the data groundwork for later AI projects.

His experience in global markets, wealth and asset management doesn’t directly carry over to securities. However, his experience in data infrastructure does, he said.

“What translates across every business is the importance of strong data foundations and a clear focus on business outcomes,” he said, adding that successful AI adoption “always depends on bringing together the right data, technology and domain expertise.”

TD’s wholesale banking arm, which includes TD Securities and corporate banking, reported record revenue of $2.5 billion, up 25% year over year in its fiscal third quarter, according to the bank’s Aug. 26 earnings report.

Chief Executive Raymond Chun said during the earnings call that the bank plans to develop its TD Securities arm through technology to lean into its growth.
