SoFi Technologies is optimistic about its growth as it introduces products to help student loan recipients manage their debt.
“Our student loan financing [and refinancing] business is an important product for us to have,” Anthony Noto, chief executive at SoFi, said during the company’s first-quarter earnings call today.

The $31 billion online bank will continue to provide its in-school student lending program, which is comparatively lower risk because it requires a parent as a co-borrower, Noto said.
THE BIG PICTURE: The U.S. Department of Education announced April 21 that it will resume collecting defaulted student loan payments in May. Default collections were paused in March 2020.
Also after a pause during the pandemic, interest began accruing again on all loans on Sept. 1, 2023, and regular student loan payments resumed in October 2023.
The Department of Education estimates that more than 5 million borrowers are in default, meaning they have not made a payment in more than a year, Brian Walsh, head of advice and planning at SoFi, told Bank Automation News.
Many online lenders, including SoFi, are revamping their offerings to meet an expected surge of student loan refinancings and repayments.
“Our planners regularly have conversations with members figuring out the best path forward with their student loans,” Walsh said. “Generally, members want to reduce their payments to fit them into their budget, be more efficient by lowering their rates or pay off their loans as soon as possible.”
Borrowers can check their rate on SoFi’s app or website and understand their alternatives in minutes without experiencing a hard credit inquiry, Walsh said.
“In general, underwriting looks at things like credit score and free cash flow to estimate the likelihood of the borrower repaying the loan. Once borrowers understand their unique options, they can make an educated and informed decision on their best path forward.”
SoFi is offering rates as low as 4.49% for five-year repayment terms and 5.63% for 20-year terms, Walsh said.
Double bottom line
“In the midst of uncertainty around student loan options of the market, we just launched an innovative member-centric refinancing solution known as SmartStart,” Noto said.
SmartStart helps borrowers slowly transition into paying student debt, according to SoFi’s April 24 release.
Borrowers can apply for SmartStart and make no principal payments on their student loans for the first nine months, making each payment more manageable, the release stated.
“This allows for lower payments in the early part of the loan and steps up into paying regular payments after this introductory period, helping members find their footing and build long-term savings,” Noto said.
The personal loan products launching next month will be available to prime credit card customers who carry revolving balances, Noto said. SoFi’s solution can help reduce monthly payments by nearly 40%, he added.
Providing student loan financing will be “a double bottom line, from the standpoint that it’s a revenue stream from Day One, but also the member becomes part of the ecosystem of SoFi,” Noto said. “There’s going to be a high lifetime value to someone who takes out an in-school loan from us.”
In Q1, SoFi reported total student loan originations of $1.2 billion, up 59% year over year, according to the company’s earnings report.
BY THE NUMBERS: In Q1, SoFi also reported:
- Adjusted net revenue of $771 million, up 33% YoY;
- Total members of 158 million, down 5% YoY; and
- Net interest income of $173 million, up 45%.
OF NOTE: The New York-based digital bank’s BaaS offering generated revenue of $407 million, up 66% YoY, according to the company’s earnings report.
SoFi plans to bring back its crypto investment and trading platform in 2025 after dropping it in 2023 due to regulatory requirements, Noto said.
The market for digitally native financial product platform is significant,” he added.
“Given the evolving regulatory landscape, we see an opportunity to reenter the crypto and blockchain business more comprehensively,” Noto said.
FUTURE LOOK: To expand its customer base and develop deeper relationships with existing clients, SoFi is launching products addressing client needs, including a debit card rewards program for Wyndham hotels and resorts, Noto said.
Later this year, the digital bank also “expects to launch similar co-brand debit card programs with other travel and hospitality companies, further expanding our footprint among consumer brands,” Noto said.
MARKET OUTLOOK: Shares of SoFi [NASDAQ: SOFI] were up 0.53% from market open today to close at $13.27. The company has a market cap of $14.68 billion.
