AI writes 60% of code at BNY, up 20 percentage points QoQ

BNY ’s AI-driven coding productivity continues to climb while its agentic AI initiatives accelerate across the organization. Roughly 60% of software code is written by AI at the $467 billion bank, Chief Information Officer and Global Head of Engineering Leigh-Ann Russell said Sept. 24 during a fireside chat at Reuters ’ Momentum AI Austin 2026 conference. That marks a 20-percentage-point increase from the second quarter . [caption id="attachment_57379311" align="aligncenter" width="800"] (Photo/Bloomberg)[/caption] Engineering productivity gains are accelerating product innovations across BNY, and non-technical employees are more active in shaping these products, Russell said. “This is where I think this idea of bringing business, product and engineering together to co-create the solution is really interesting because … we can build anything, but what do we want to build? Why do we want to build it?” she said. C-Suite alignment Roughly half of BNY employees build their own AI agents , and 60% use AI daily, according to previous FinAi News reporting. This initiative to use and build AI regularly has trickled down from the C-Suite, starting with Chief Executive Robin Vince , Russell said. ALSO READ: C-Suite alignment is ‘most important piece’ of AI puzzle “All of our executive committee is vibe-coded, every single one of them, including our CEO, who's built multiple agents and now actually sits on the board of OpenAI because he's really leaned into this technology so hard,” she said. Vibe coding means building AI tools using natural language rather than traditional code writing, according to IBM . Russell also has deployed her own “digital twin,” which has helped her better understand complex systems and performance cues such as model drift, she said, adding that she uses the agent as a personal and leadership coach. “There's no way that we can lead in this world unless we're hands - on with the technology." — Leigh-Ann Russell, CIO and global head of engineering, BNY Executives who mandate AI adoption without understanding or using it themselves can create an “incredibly challenging” environment for employees, Grasshopper Bank Chief Technology Officer Peter Chapman previously told FinAi News . For BNY leaders, continuous reevaluation of its AI strategy is crucial to driving adoption, Russell said. “We developed a training program, which we've now rewritten three times to make it accessible,” she said.
