If Square were running for alternative payments king, the election would be a landslide.

Just this week alone, the startup darling announced two major partnerships that will grow its usage, and status, enormously.

Firstly, Politico first reported yesterday that the Obama reelection campaign is allowing its staff to take campaign donations with Square. And secondly, T-Mobile USA Inc announced today it would offer Square credit card readers in select retail stores, making it the first carrier to offer the credit card reader in its stores.

“The success of our small business customers is important to us,” said Matt Millen, vice president of small and medium business sales at T-Mobile, in a statement. “Formerly ‘cash only’ small businesses can now simply and cost-effectively accept credit cards with their smartphone using Square, giving them an easy path to grow.”

Both announcements point to how alternative payments are becoming mainstream-ish and highlight what payment deficiencies still exist in America today. In the digital age, Americans need to be able to pay in more forms than just paper.
