September has proven to be a busy month in banking and fintech staffing shuffles. JPMorgan Chase made notable investments in its data and analytics efforts, and HSBC USA created a new role centered on diversity and inclusion. Meanwhile, fintechs Vise and GoCardless continue to draw top industry talent away from more established players.

Here are the most notable hires for September:

JPMorgan Chase appoints CIB chief data and analytics officer

JPMorgan Chase, which has more than $2.6 trillion of assets, is diving deeper into data with the appointment of its new corporate and investment banking (CIB) chief data and analytics officer, Samik Chandarana, according to a LinkedIn post by Chandarana this week.

Chandarana has been with the bank for 22 years and was the CIB head of analytics and data science prior to bring promoted to the division’s chief data and analytics officer. In his expanded role, Chandarana will build on the bank’s data management capabilities through secure and reliable data, he said. He will retain his lead position of the applied AI and machine learning organizations for CIB, and will serve as the head of the Machine Learning Center of Excellence across the entire bank, “where we will further advance the analysis of the organization’s data to build scalable analytics and AI solutions,” Chandarana said in the post.

Fintech Vise snags talent from Affirm, Amazon and BlackRock

Vise, a fintech startup that uses AI for investment portfolio management, is luring in executives from top financial and technology companies despite launching its product less than one year ago.

Shah Hafizi joined Vise this week as chief compliance officer. Prior to this role, Hafizi was chief compliance officer of BlackRock’s digital wealth division and was executive director and counsel at UBS. Before joining the private sector, Hafizi was special counsel at the Securities Exchange Commission’s division of trading and markets.

Vise also welcomed this week its new vice president of product, Niki Sri-Kumar, who came to the startup from point-of-sale lender Affirm as its director of product. She has also held positions at Barclays Capital and Cue Ball Capital, a venture capital and private equity firm based in Boston.

Vise also picked up Yoonie Kim as its new vice president of people and talent, bringing with her 20 years of talent recruitment experience from Amazon, Google, Dropbox and Nintendo.

HSBC USA appoints newly created head of inclusion and culture

Ralph Jardine is HSBC USA’s first head of inclusion and culture, a newly created position focused on expanding the bank’s diversity and inclusion efforts, the bank announced this week. Specifically, Jardine will be tasked with expanding its customer demographic, investing in communities that need support and increasing the $192 billion dollar bank’s pipeline of diverse candidates for leadership roles.

Prior to this appointment, Jardine was the head of the Commercial Banking People Excellence Team launched in 2017. In his new post he will report to CEO Michael Roberts and U.S. Head of Human Resources Maureen Gillan-Myer.

“The events that have unfolded this year — from the killing of George Floyd to the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement — have emphasized the need for change,” Roberts said in a statement. “As an organization, we need to address how we approach inclusion and the culture we are nurturing, and ensure we are fostering an environment that appropriately represents the diversity of our world today.”

GoCardless names chief revenue officer

GoCardless, which facilitates recurring payments through its global network, has named Even Walser as its chief revenue officer, the company announced this month.

Walser will be responsible for the London-based company’s commercial sales organization, with a focus on sales operations, partnerships, solution engineering and international operations. Walser brings nearly 20 years of sales and business development experience from digital experience analytics company Decibel and Genius.com, which facilitates automated marketing.

GoCardless processes $15 billion of payments across more than 30 countries annually. Its clients include DocuSign, Tripadvisor and The Guardian.

The 2020 Banking Automation Summit Virtual Experience, taking place November 9-10, is a new event that will provide a platform for industry professionals to share fresh insights, tools, trends and strategies. The Summit will focus on how automation will transform banking, especially with regard to back-office operations, risk management, data science and utilization, customer experience and more. Register here.
