Mastercard went on a buying spree this week with its acquisitions of Aiia, a European open banking platform, and CipherTrace, a cryptocurrency intelligence company.

The credit card company did not disclose the details of either deal.

Mastercard announced its plan to expand its open banking capabilities with the acquisition of Aiia, which offers a direct connection to banks through a single API. Open banking allows customers and financial institutions to access financial data in a uniform and permissioned way. Customers can control how their data is used by third-party providers while also presenting a more complete financial picture of accounts information that would otherwise be locked away in siloed banks or credit unions.

The Copenhagen-based Aiia was looking for a partner with a strong tech understanding, Rune Mai, CEO and co-founder of the company, told Bank Automation News Friday.

“We were looking for a partner to accelerate our European expansion of high quality and usable open banking — one that had a strong tech understanding and setup, one that had a strong focus on payments and one that shared our vision of safe and trusted data sharing,” Mai said. “We found that with Mastercard, and vice versa.”

Aiia offers the same strategic rationale that Mastercard and Visa sought with the U.S.-based data aggregators Finicity and Plaid, respectively, according to a Morgan Stanley research equity update issued on the deal. In other words, it’s about integration using an API to connect with banks and fintechs. Finicity was acquired by Mastercard in 2020, while Visa’s $5.3 billion deal to buy Plaid was blocked by regulators that same year.

Morgan Stanley anticipates the deal to create new, usage-based revenue from Aiia’s bank integration services, and new opportunities to cross-sell Finicity’s complimentary capabilities. Mastercard confirmed this in its own statement, saying “The connectivity of Aiia in Europe will enable Mastercard to deliver the credit decisioning and credit scoring applications of Finicity to European clients.”

Finicity, which is used by Experian and Ellie Mae, and also integrates with Jack Henry’s Banno Digital toolkit, offers a collection of APIs that allow banks and financial institutions to directly plug third-party services into their apps. Connecting Aiia to Finicity in the U.S. will also help deliver the account information services and payment applications of Aiia to U.S. clients, Mastercard said in its statement Tuesday.

Aiia already has nearly 40 banks as clients, including Danske Bank, DNB, OP Bank, Jyske Bank, Santander and Lunar, Mai said. Other clients include payment companies such as Checkout.fi, Svea Payments and ConnectPay; accounting system providers such as Visma Dinero and Visma E-Conomic; and a variety of other fintechs.

Aiia has already raised nearly $16 million in four funding rounds, according to Crunchbase.

Meanwhile, Mastercard’s recent acquisition of CipherTrace, which bills itself as “the first blockchain forensics team,” will offer insights into more than 900 cryptocurrencies, according to a statement released by Mastercard. The company provides solutions for banks, exchanges and other financial institutions, and helped develop tools for tracing cryptocurrency Monero for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s investigations of crimes using the privacy coin. Cryptocurrency exchange Binance is also a CipherTrace client.

Mastercard will integrate CipherTrace’s suite of digital assets, including artificial intelligence and risk capabilities, into its cybersecurity solution in order to provide businesses with transparency to “understand their risks and to help manage their digital asset regulatory and compliance obligations,” Mastercard stated Thursday. This will allow Mastercard to differentiate between its card and real-time payments infrastructure.

CipherTrace has raised $45.1 million in eight funding rounds, according to Crunchbase.

Mastercard [MA] stock was trading at $348.90 at 2:13 p.m., down less than 1% as of market open.
