Wells Fargo is building out its robotic process automation (RPA) program, if job postings are any indication.
A job listing for a robotic automation engineer posted to Wells Fargo’s website says the $1.96 trillion bank is aiming to develop at least 300 automations “in the next couple of years as a part of the Enterprise Robotics and Intelligent Automation program.”

The San Francisco-based bank is hiring an engineer to deliver automated processes internally and manage the changes required for the automations by the larger Wells Fargo technology team, made up of 40,000 information technology and security employees, according to the post. Wells Fargo’s posting also calls for the RPA engineer to develop business process automation in BluePrism and UiPath.
Wells Fargo CEO Charlie Scharf has been vocal about the bank’s efficiency efforts, saying “our efficiency ratio is not competitive,” during the bank’s fourth-quarter earnings call on Jan. 15. As of the fourth quarter, Wells had an efficiency ratio of 83%, up from 79% year over year. By comparison, Citigroup’s efficiency ratio was 65% in the fourth quarter and Bank of America’s was 65%, both up from the year prior.
Scharf outlined the bank’s projected portfolio of more than 250 efficiency initiatives planned for the next four years, which are expected to amount to more than $8 billion in potential gross savings concentrated across five categories: organizational structure optimization; branch rationalization and staffing; consumer lending origination and service costs; commercial banking transformation; and real estate and third-party spend efficiencies.
The expansion of Wells Fargo’s RPA program is likely to bring efficiency gains to the bank. According to data released last week by RPA software provider Automation Anywhere, organizations have seen a 50% to 150% return on investment within 12 months with RPA, with measurable returns amounting to an average 2.5 times the RPA investment’s overall cost.
