State Street is gearing up to launch several AI solutions in 2026 after increasing its tech spend in the fourth quarter.

The $366 billion bank is “intensely focused” on seizing opportunities related to technology innovations, Chief Executive Ronald O’Hanley said during its Q4 earnings call today.

“For our next-gen transformation initiatives, underpinned by our growing AI-enabled capabilities and associated agentics, we are building a stronger foundation and new platforms that aim to even further improve efficiency and empower smarter decisions,” he said. “We are positioning State Street to set new industry standards and fundamentally transform the way we and our clients work.”

Boston, Mass.-based State Street also sees AI deployment as an opportunity to increase core operating leverage as it ramps up investments in a multiyear technology transformation, O’Hanley said. Core operating leverage measures how effectively a bank uses fixed costs to increase profit.

“That’s going to be a much bigger part of the story as you get into 2026 and years beyond,” he said.

BY THE NUMBERS: In its Q4 earnings release today, State Street reported:

  • Information systems and communications expenses rose 11% year over year to $533 million;
  • Total revenue increased 7.5% YoY to $3.7 billion;
  • Net income declined 4.6% YoY to $747 million;
  • Operating leverage rose 105 basis points YoY; and
  • Headcount fell 2.1% YoY to 51,503.

NOTEWORTHY: In September, State Street acquired a minority state in Apex Fintech Solutions, an AI-driven wealth management platform.

This investment gives State Street “a highly modernized platform that’s much more up to date than anybody else’s and really positions us for this ongoing shift away from kind of pure institutional asset management,” O’Hanley said.

The bank is prioritizing AI deployment in two or three “high-value” areas before shifting its focus to analogous areas, O’Hanley said.

MARKET REACTION: Shares of State Street [NYSE: STT] were down 6% from market open to $128 as of market close today. It has a market capitalization of $35.8 billion.
