FIS sees need for chief trust officer role in age of AI

FIS has appointed a chief trust officer, a recognition that in regulated finance, trust — not data — has become the company’s differentiator. “I used to think about our moat being our data,” Chief Executive Stephanie Ferris said this week at the Evident AI Symposium in New York. “But trust is actually our moat.” The Jacksonville, Fla.-based company created the chief trust officer position and started branding its products as "trust assured" to let clients and regulators know that the technology is safe, she said. [caption id="attachment_57390145" align="alignright" width="321"] (Courtesy/FinAi News)[/caption] "When you're working with FIS, whether it's your data that you're getting from us or any of our products or anything that we're providing to you, it has to have an implicit amount of trust involved in it," Ferris said. The importance of trust Other FIs including Santander Bank are also paying close attention when it comes to trust in technology. "Chief trust officers really ensure quality which is essential for banks," Chief Data and AI Scientist Marco Bressan , said at the event. Having one person or department responsible for AI quality assurance helps the bank provide better tools to customers and stay current in an evolving compliance environment, Bressan said. Accountability at forefront The thinking underpins how FIS is deploying agentic AI, she said. “In financial services, if you can’t name the person responsible for the outcome, you can’t run that agent,” Ferris said. Agents must be evidence-based, auditable and traceable, with humans in the loop. “Agentic doesn’t mean autonomous without limits,” Ferris said. Citi , for one, requires its agents to be registered with a human, according to an Amazon Web Services (AWS) report published this month. "We’re establishing governance on who owns the outputs,” Julien Courbe , enterprise transformation leader for Citi, said in the AWS report.
