“This digital enablement is a trifecta of better customer engagement and client delight, deeper penetration of products and services, and operating efficiency,” said CEO Brian Moynihan during the bank’s third quarter earnings call with investors.

Bank of America, which has over $2.7 trillion in assets, has seen steady growth from the peer-to-peer payments network recently — its customers sent just $21 billion during the third quarter of 2019. Zelle, which is operated by Early Warning Services and owned by BofA along with a handful of other giant U.S. banks, has been growing its transaction volume as it seeks to earn market share from popular apps like Venmo.

Zelle now has 12.2 million Bank of America customers using the network, up from 11.3 million last quarter and up from 8.9 million in Q3 of 2019. In total, customers sent just under 140 million transactions via Zelle this quarter, up from 117.2 million transactions last quarter.

Total digital customer growth, meanwhile, was less impressive. Bank of America announced it has 39.3 million active digital customers total as of this quarter, remaining flat from the second quarter. Mobile banking users climbed slightly from 30.3 million last quarter to 30.6 million this quarter. The bank this quarter gained 1.5 million new users of its digital assistant, Erica, bringing the user total to 15.9 million.

Bank of America highlighted growth in its new ventures during the earnings call. Earlier this month, the bank announced an automated personal finance tool called Life Plan, designed to give customers accessible advice to meet their financial goals. Already, the bank has seen 500,000 customers use the service, Moynihan said. “We see depth of penetration and digital engagement across the whole consumer business,” he added.

The 2020 Banking Automation Summit Virtual Experience, taking place November 9-10, is a new event that will provide a platform for industry professionals to share fresh insights, tools, trends and strategies. The Summit will focus on how automation will transform banking, especially with regard to back-office operations, risk management, data science and utilization, customer experience and more. Register here.
