Anthropic took the lead in business adoption over OpenAI in April.

Adoption of Anthropic reached 34.4% of businesses that month, a 3.8% increase from March, according to the latest Ramp AI Index released this month.

The Ramp AI Index is a monthly measure of AI adoption by U.S. businesses. According to the March AI index by Ramp, 51.9% of companies in the financial services sector use Anthropic, compared to 45.5% of companies using OpenAI. Figures for April were not available.

At the same time, adoption of OpenAI fell 2.9% month over month to 32.3%, according to the index.

Over the past year, Anthropic has quadrupled business adoption while OpenAI’s business adoption grew by just 0.3%, according to the index.

Anthropic leads in math, coding

Banks and fintechs are seeing efficiency gains after deploying Anthropic within their operations.

At fintech nCino, for example, every employee “is licensed for Claude to do their job regardless of what function they’re in,” Chief Executive Sean Desmond told FinAi News.

“Our technology team did a deep evaluation of the others and Anthropic came out as a front-runner,” Desmond said.

Anthropic has an edge in coding and solving math problems, Desmond said, adding that nearly all job functions at the company have seen a productivity boost because of Claude.

The software development team at nCino, for example, has seen a 40% to 50% increase in efficiency, Desmond said.

“It’s not just code generation,” he said. “I think of what products you can actually ship quicker with AI.”

Claude has been such a good tool for nCino that the company has embedded it in nearly all of its gen AI offerings, including Banking Advisor and Analyst Digital Partner, Desmond said.

Similarly, commercial lending service provider Vine also is seeing productivity gains, specifically in software development, CEO David Eads told FinAi News.

He said the tool is making software development tasks up to 50% more efficient on average, which includes quicker code generation and testing.

“We did a tech integration recently and it took us a day to do that with Claude compared to three weeks for a similar tool last year without Claude,” Eads said.

Most of Vine’s developers use Opus 4.7 for software development, Eads said, and even non-technical employees are able to dabble with technical tasks thanks to Claude.

Even JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon said this month that he used Anthropic for the first time recently and was “blown away” by its speed and accuracy.

Why is Claude gaining traction over OpenAI?

“As far as we can tell, the biggest factor is the rising reputation of the Claude algorithms and specific tools, including Claude Code and Claude Cowork,” a spokesperson at data analytics company SimilarWeb told FinAi News.

The mostly-positive press Anthropic gained over its dispute with the Pentagon may also have played a role, since it was playing the role of defender of the integrity of the technology and protector of personal privacy, the spokesperson said. “The quality of the software was also part of that story — the Pentagon really wanted access, just with no strings attached.”
