Square Introduces Square Market, a Free Online Store for Small Businesses

standard_strange_squarePayments platform provider Square has introduced Square Market, an online marketplace for local businesses.

Square already has a strong foothold among small businesses and micro-merchants with its familiar credit card reader, but now it is entering a different space: online selling. Similar to Etsy, eBay and other online marketplaces, Square Marketplace allows users to set up stores and product pages, and to leverage social media via Square’s API to get the word out.

Square is rapidly expanding its footprint in the payments world, with its card reader, a mobile wallet product, a point-of-sale system, and now an online sales platform.

There appeared to be at least 24 stores in the market at press time. Square also owns the checkout process for the merchants.

The sites are said to take only minutes to set up and there is no fee — that is, until sales are made, when a 2.75% fee is levied. This is the same fee Square charges per credit card swipe with its credit card reader.

Square Market is available both on mobile and on online. The updated Square Register app was released today for iOS devices.

This social play is also a new move for Square, and puts it in the space of Chirpify, an established seller of products via social media, and American Express, which has made tentative steps forward selling over Twitter.

Square processes $15 billion in payments annually.
