Mitek Looks to Increase Customer Visibility as it Wades into Prepaid

How does “Mitek Inside” sound?

The imaging company Mitek, based in San Diego, is looking to increase its visibility among customers as it ventures into the prepaid space.

It’s well known in the financial industry that Mitek is behind many — if not most — of the RDC (remote deposit capture) solutions out there. It’s also well known that mobile customers love RDC, and many consider it the make-or-break feature in choosing their bank. But these RDC-loving customers have never heard of Mitek, which owns the bulk of the patents surrounding RDC.

Jim DeBello, Mitek’s CEO, aims to change that.

Employing a low-key social media strategy to engage with RDC users on Twitter is one way Mitek is cultivating an image as a “more personable and friendlier brand,” DeBello told Bank Innovation.

Another way Mitek is looking to raise its visibility is by revealing its involvement with banks. Mitek has more than 400 FI customers, including the 10 largest banks in the US. Think of the “Intel Inside” label on your PC. It’s not clear exactly how Mitek will make this happen, but the discussions have begun.

“We’re talking about it,” DeBello said.

Meanwhile, Mitek is applying RDC in another innovative way with its involvement in American Express and Walmart’s joint venture Bluebird. Mitek is allowing Bluebird customers to deposit checks directly to their American Express-backed prepaid card, a rerouting of the payments food chain that should particularly benefit the underbanked.
