EBay today joined Uber, PayPal, Lyft and other tech heavyweights as an inaugural member of the Libra Association, the Switzerland-based organization that will oversee Facebook‘s cryptocurrency.

Although eBay, which has a market capitalization of about $35 billion, would not reveal how Libra will change the way buyers and sellers on the marketplace will transact, eBay’s vice president of global payments, Alyssa Cutright, told Bank Innovation that blockchain and cryptocurrency have the potential to make cross-border transactions cheaper, to eBay’s presumed benefit.

The following is an edited version of the conversation.

Why is Libra important for eBay?
We’re excited about the possibilities for a trusted, accepted and stable cryptocurrency could bring to eBay’s marketplace. We want to ensure that our seller inventory is accessible to buyers around the world and that those buyers have the ability to use their preferred payment method. We also are keen to innovate with technologies that have lower transaction costs for our sellers and make their businesses more profitable.

As a partner, what does eBay bring to the table?
EBay will bring our unique perspective and experience with massive scale, infrastructure and product development to contribute to its success. We [also] don’t lose sight of our ultimate goal to increase economic inclusion on our platform.

Do you have a view on how enablers like blockchain and cryptocurrency can make e-commerce payments transactions easier?
Blockchain and cryptocurrency offer the potential to reduce areas of friction when conducting global trade and to lower the associated costs across various use cases. This technology could open access to new customers and make commerce more transparent and trustworthy as it evolves.  We see great potential, but there are still many unknowns to work through.

Why do you think this type of initiative will improve financial inclusion?
Blockchain and cryptocurrency are decentralized, secure and operate in the best interest of the users. As cryptocurrency evolves, it has the potential to expand the global participation in e-commerce and create new opportunities for buyers and sellers.
