Citi’s Global API Developer Hub Has Nearly 50 APIs One Month After Launch

pexels-photo-70244 Citi Fintech kicked off its one-year anniversary this November through the launch of its Global API Developer Hub, a platform that has developed 49 APIs across eight usage categories after just one month of availability.

“This was our foray into an open-innovation approach, which is something we’re seeing a lot of movement around,” said Carey Kolaja, global chief product officer for Citi Fintech, of the development and success of the offering. “It’s part of our agenda to change the way we work; through this platform we’ve actually sped up the ability to partner with others.”

The 49 APIs currently deal with money management, P2P payments, money transfer, Citi reward offerings, investment purchases, and account authorization.

After launching on November 10, the platform has seen registrations from about 1,500 developers. Partners include Mastercard, Virgin Money, 1800Flowers, and Wonder, a digital gifting company currently leveraging Citi’s “Pay with Points” API, which is so far one of the most popular developed on the platform. It enables users to link their Citi card and cover the cost of a digital gift purchase with Citi ThankYou Points.

Aside from Pay with Points, the other most popular API developed on this platform has been Money Movement, which has been particularly successful in the Australian and Singapore markets—the two markets in which the platform is currently available, in addition to the U.S.

The Money Movement API allows Citi customers to move funds from account to account through third-party apps, according to Kolaja; who attributes the success of the platform to the approach Citi Fintech took to building out he offering.

“[The success] is really due to the fact that is a global platform, and that we have taken a customer-focused approach,” said Kolaja. “Our belief is that through this process we will continue to release and publish more APIs, by continuing to look at the needs of our partners.”
