Wells Fargo’s Innovation Center in Menlo Park, Calif., is hosting meetings with partners and venture capital firms after opening in May.

“We are using this space to uncover new ways to collaborate internally, with customers, and partners, using skills across areas like research, emerging technology, product, strategy and operations to create solutions for our clients,” Reetika Grewal, head of enterprise innovation and digital for commercial banking and corporate and investment banking at Wells Fargo, told Bank Automation News.

The Innovation Center is home to the bank’s Innovation Enablement team, which is responsible for the bank’s “highest-priority strategic initiatives,” Grewal said. The center will also focus on collaboration across business lines.

“The new facility will be a hub for all of our innovators to share their diverse perspectives and skill sets,” Grewal said.

Recent innovations

The bank will build on its latest innovations:

  • Earlier this year, the bank had more than 191 AI, machine learning and natural language processing features in the pipeline;
  • In the second quarter, the bank said it would invest in branch optimization, including new technology and digital account opening capabilities; and
  • In 2022, the bank rolled out its AI-driven chatbot, Fargo.

Other innovation hubs

Wells Fargo joins the following institutions that have innovation labs:

  • Truist opened its Truist Innovation and Technology Center (ITC) in June 2022. The innovation center serves as a meeting place for innovation for internal projects and for Truist partners to collaborate. ITC projects include automated planning and goal-setting tool, Truist Invest Pro; self-directed investing solution, Truist Trade; and AI-enhanced virtual assistant, Truist Assist.
  • Michigan State University Federal Credit Union started its innovation lab in 2021 and, through the lab, the bank launched its internal, AI-driven chatbot, Gene.
