TD Bank invested in operations and innovation in the second quarter as technology and personnel expenses increased.

During Q2, the $1.4 trillion bank’s expenses increased 16% year over year to $5 billion, according to the bank’s earnings supplement.

First Horizon Corp. fell by the most since September 2008 as the crisis in regional banks cast doubt on whether Toronto-Dominion Bank will follow through with its planned $13.4 billion takeover of the lender.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: The bank’s tech spend contributed to “four critical areas,” President and Chief Executive Leo Salom said Thursday during the bank’s earnings call. The areas of investment include consumer distribution expansion, in-store expansion, digital and mobile deliverables, and building out the national commercial bank footprint.

“In Canada, we are expanding hiring of frontline and specialist advisers and accelerating investment upgrade platforms and enhanced digital and mobile capabilities across our business,” Group CEO Bharat Masrani added during the call.

BY THE NUMBERS: TD Bank reported in Q2:

  • Tech spend increased 20% YoY to $499 million;
  • Software expenses grew 3% sequentially to $88 million; and
  • Mobile users in the United States increased 7% to 4.7 million.

NOTEWORTHY: TD Bank’s integration of New York City-based investment bank Cowen is underway, Masrani said. The bank announced its Cowen acquisition plans in Q3 2022.

“In fact, only one day after closing, TD Cowen acted as book runner on its first equity offering. … This is just the beginning as we leverage our capabilities in U.S. equities and extend our competitive advantage,” Masrani said.

MARKET REACTION: TD Bank shares were up slightly at 0.74% to $57.47 at noon today.

FLASHBACK: This month, TD Bank introduced two new digital-forward credit cards, according to a bank release. The two cards, TD Clear and TD FlexPay, present monthly subscription-based offerings and flexible payment capabilities.

“Technology played a pivotal role in driving system changes, ensuring a seamless launch of TD’s newest card products, Flex and Clear,” Aline Arslanian, head of U.S. credit cards and unsecured lending technology at TD Bank, previously told Bank Automation News.

FORWARD LOOK: TD Bank will host an Investor Day on June 8, Masrani said, noting, “We will provide more details on the bank’s strategy and growth plans with a focus on our Canadian retail business.”
