Navy Federal Adds Financial Calendar to Smartphone App

callendarNavy Federal Credit Union added a financial calendar to its smartphone app with a new update released this week.

The idea began with Navy Federal’s tablet applications and proved valuable to customers there, according to Tim Day, assistant vice president of digital channels at Navy Federal and head of the credit union’s mobile efforts.

The calendar shows financial events in the member’s account – bills due, paychecks coming in, and the like. An idea similar to this won BankMobile’s 2015 “Build Your Own Bank” contest.

It is not difficult to envision an entire app built around past and upcoming transactions, such as the Sweep, which is also organized by date (and was recently acquired by lending startup Affirm.) The calendar is effectively a personal financial management tool, keeping users abreast of obligations.

Screenshots of the app are below.

“Navy Federal first launched the financial calendar in September 2013 exclusively on the iPad app,” Day said. “We knew members liked this feature, so we felt it was important to bring it to all of our members regardless of the mobile device they choose to use. Because our members enjoyed it on iPad, and used it to plan their finances, they wanted the same for mobile. They spoke, we listened.”

Navy Federal has 2.5 million mobile users, 58% on iOS and 42% on Android devices.
