Google Cloud secures major Italian bank

Google continues to make major banking inroads with Monday’s announcement of a new deal to manage IT infrastructure for one of Italy’s largest banks, Intesa Sanpaolo.

The $1.2 trillion (997 billion euro) Intesa Sanpaolo Group serves 14.6 million customers at approximately 5,360 branches, according to the bank’s website.

The deal requires two new cloud regions, one in Turin and one in Milan, to offer Google Cloud services using data centers provided by TIM, according to the release. Google Cloud currently operates in 24 regions and is slated to expand into eight more across Europe, Canada, Australia, South America and India, according to the Google website. By comparison, Microsoft Azure has announced a region with availability zones in Northern Italy, but currently, its nearest region is in Switzerland. And Amazon Web Services launched a region with three zones in Milan in 2020.

According to Google, the agreement will also have a broader impact in modernizing the region, as cloud services will now be available to other businesses in addition to Intesa Sanpaolo.

“Extreme reliability” gave Google the edge in the selection process, Fabio Fregi, head of Google Cloud Italy, said in a prepared statement. The benefits of the deal will extend beyond one bank, and support “the evolution of the Italian industrial, banking and public sectors,” Fregi added.

A center dedicated to artificial intelligence development, as well as training and professional support for startups, is also part of the agreement between Google, Intesa Sanpaolo and TIM, which operates data centers in Milan and Turin. Details of that venture are still being worked out by the three companies.

Google last year launched a beta of Google Plex, a new mobile consumer banking service accessed through Google Pay. Details are scant on Google Plex, but it’s expected to launch officially this year. Already, several West Coast banks have signed on to co-brand the offering, including Citibank, BankMobile, BBVA USA and Seattle Bank.
