Fintech Funding: Backbase secures $128M, clears $2.7B valuation

Fintechs defy recession concerns, round up millions in growth funding

Backbase has raised $130 million in a series A round, the company announced this week.

The self-styled “engagement banking” fintech provides a white-labeled platform for banks and credit unions that digitizes retail and business banking and counts $181 billion KeyBank and $153 billion Navy Federal Credit Union as banks that have “embraced” its products.

Leading the funding was Motive Partners, an investment firm that looks forward to helping the company scale its business, Rob Heyvaert, founder and managing partner of Motive Partners, said in a release.

“For more than a decade, Backbase has shown leadership and innovation in enhancing digital relationships between financial institutions and its customers,” Heyvaert said. “We’re excited to support Jouk [Pleiter, chief executive] and the Backbase team with this initial fundraise as they continue to expand, grow and build the leading, customer-centric, Engagement Banking Platform globally.”

This initial funding places Backbase at a $2.7 billion valuation.

Latin American payments fintech Kushki gathers $100M in series B

Kushki has raised $100 million in a series B round that puts the company at over an approximate $1 billion valuation, according to a Wednesday release.

The fintech helps businesses in Latin America make payments on a secure platform. This new funding will see Kushki scale its payments platform for deployment in “any” country, according to a release. The company currently operates in five countries and employs 750 people.

Participants in the round include Clocktower Ventures, SoftBank Latin America Fund, Kaszek Ventures and DILA Capital. Kushki has raised $194 million over four rounds, according to Crunchbase.

Codat raises $100M to build data infrastructure capabilities

API company Codat has raised $100 million in a round led by JPMorgan Chase Growth Equity Partners, the company announced Wednesday.

Codat, which touts a “universal API” for small business data, offers risk automation, automated reconciliation and accounting, commerce, and open banking APIs. Patrick McGoldrick, partner at JPMorgan Chase Growth Equity, said Codat has major potential to change financial data sharing.

“We believe Codat has the potential to fundamentally change the way data is shared across the small business economy. JPMorgan Chase has an extensive small business customer base so we understand the power of connecting and standardizing data – whether it is used for onboarding new customers or offering insights on business performance,” McGoldrick said.

Codat has raised a total of $176.8 million over 9 funding rounds, according to Crunchbase.

Trovata nabs $27M for automated cash management

Cash management fintech Trovata has raised $27M in a series B round, the company announced Tuesday.

Trovata offers automated cash forecasting, reporting and analysis, along with a customizable API platform. The fintech counts $2.3 trillion Citi and $587 billion U.S. Bank among its bank partners, according to its website. Funding was led by Fin Capital, with participation from JPMorgan Chase Strategic Investments, Wells Fargo Strategic Capital and Capital One Ventures, among others.

Trovata has raised a total of $57.6 million over seven rounds, according to Crunchbase.
