Longtime Ally Financial leader Doug Timmerman today was named the lender’s interim chief executive, succeeding Jeffrey Brown.
Brown, who announced his plans to step down in October, will depart Ally on Jan. 31 and Timmerman will take over on Feb. 1, according to a company release.

Timmerman has held several leadership positions at Ally in his 30-plus years with the company, including president of dealer financial services, a role he took in summer 2021 in which he oversaw relationships with 22,000 dealers. He previously served as president of auto finance since 2018, according to Ally’s website.
Timmerman’s experience at Ally spans commercial and consumer lending, collections, sales and marketing. He was named Auto Finance News’, a sister publication to Bank Automation News, inaugural Executive of the Year in 2019.
Ally is working through its AI playbook and has identified over 200 uses for AI within its operations, including its launch of Ally.ai in June.
Ally Financial’s board of directors is working with a search firm to identify a permanent CEO, according to the release.
