Commonwealth Bank of Australia has been able to streamline innovation through a two-week sprint or AI hackathon.
The bank, which services 17 million customers, built about 20 AI agents in that time, Domenic Ziino, executive general manager of business bank operations and technology at Commonwealth Bank, said Nov. 19 at BIAN Banking Summit 2025 in Chicago.

These agents call on MCP-enabled services, domains and interfaces, transforming the “speed at which we can innovate,” Ziino said. Customer pain points that haven’t been addressed or were difficult to address are now being addressed with AI.
The bank was exploring AI prior to the November hackathon. For example:
- Commonwealth is working with cyber-intelligence firm Apate.ai to access near-real-time scam intelligence; and
- It is using ChatIT, the bank’s generative AI-enabled IT support assistant, developed using Microsoft AI and OpenAI.
Bank priorities
AI is one of the bank’s priorities, Ziino said.
The top four priorities are:
- Increase speed of delivery;
- Address its technology estate including data, legacy platforms and tech debt;
- Be a global leader in generative AI; and
- Ensure reliability when managing updates and transformations.
