Citi is integrating AI-driven automations into its digital business banking platform with the goal of greater efficiency.
CitiDirect Commercial Banking aims to bring all banking functions, including foreign exchange, loans and cash advances, to one place, Mark Sugden, head of CitiDirect Commercial Banking and digital transformation for Citi Commercial Bank, told Bank Automation News.

“We’ve been exploring the use of AI particularly around automating processes to aim for greater efficiency and reduce duplication,” Sugden said.
AI-driven automation has been added to these processes within the platform:
- Data extraction;
- Completing forms;
- Routing client queries; and
- Fraud detection.
Upgrading platform
The $1.7 trillion bank surveyed 10,000 customers to determine other areas for improvement on the platform. As a result, new additions include:
- Proactive prompts that guide clients through common tasks;
- Fully integrated KYC process and automated renewals;
- Digitalized onboarding;
- Seamless ERP integrations; and
- Improved client communication.
The improved ERP integration, done via API, can reduce ERP implementation time from up to a week to under a day, Sugden said. “Our clients don’t need to spend the usual lengthy time in creating file formats, encrypting, decrypting files and testing connectivity.”
