Citi Commercial Cards will deploy payments fintech Marqeta to support tokenized card access for its corporate customers.
Marqeta will integrate with Citi Commercial Cards, which operates under the umbrella of $2.3 trillion Citigroup, to support network agnostic provision of corporate physical and virtual cards into secure mobile wallets, a Citi spokesperson told Bank Automation News.

“The provisioning of the card into a wallet is automated and takes place through our Citi Manager app, which is used by all our cardholders to manage their account,” the spokesperson said. Card access is moved instantly to the user’s ApplePay or GooglePay mobile wallet, although customers have the option to manually input their information.
The service hinges on tokenization, which protects user information by replacing sensitive data with a dispensable “token.” The token acts as a reference point for an internal token database, allowing users to make and track digital payments in real time without exposing account information to cybercriminals. This proves significant in a digital payments environment increasingly focused on security and data anonymity.
Use cases for the service include contactless business transactions, substitutions for lost or forgotten physical cards, and payments for gig workers and temporary employees, Citi told BAN. Service will be available in 40 countries, according to a release.
Marqeta, which has also partnered with $3.7 billion JPMorgan Chase and $17 billion First National Bank of Omaha, saw shares shoot up 14% following the announcement earlier this month.
Shares of Marqueta [NASDAQ:MQ] were trading at $11.36 as of market close, up 2.99% from market open.
