But how about letting customers design their own accounts? Does that sound like crazy talk? Not to Union BanCal Corp., based in San Francisco. The bank, which has assets of $88.2 billion and operates as “Union Bank,” launched Banking By Design in October 2012, to the horror of buttoned-up bankers across the country. With Banking By Design, customers don’t need to accept products or services they don’t need. Instead, they can pay a la carte for just the things they want – what a concept! We think they got the idea from Baskin-Robbins.
