BankSouth is moving its core banking platform to financial services technology provider FIS to enhance its data and technology strategy.
The $1.6 billion, Lake Oconee, Ga.-based community bank announced on May 20 that it is using FIS’ platform for its retail and business banking verticals.
The move comes on the heels of the bank’s March announcement that it teamed up with permanent holding company Sequence Holdings, which enhances the operations of established businesses through technology, including AI, a BankSouth spokesperson told FinAi News.
With backgrounds working at Palantir, Scale AI and Apple, the Sequence Holdings’ engineering team will help the bank deploy AI-powered tools to streamline banking, according to the bank.
Integrating FIS
With the Sequence Holdings team behind BankSouth and its contract with its previous core provider expiring, the bank decided FIS was the right next core provider.
BankSouth declined to name the previous core provider but mentioned it had no issues with that provider.
The integration will help “the bank more easily connect with fintech partners and deploy new capabilities over time,” Andrew Beatty, head of global cores at FIS, told FinAi News.
That standardized data foundation will support the bank’s long-term AI efforts, he said.
“The bank will be better positioned to deploy and scale AI-driven capabilities across fraud prevention, customer engagement and operational efficiency,” Beatty said.
Examples of FIS’ AI-enabled applications at BankSouth include:
- Fraud detection, including flagging suspicious activity;
- Personalized product recommendations; and
- Enhanced back-office automation.
Agentic efforts
FIS is also developing and testing in-product agentic experiences, Beatty said.
Those agentic experiences enable “banks to navigate and access insights in context and execute workflows from within our banking cores,” he said.
FIS’ agentic capabilities are expected to launch in the first half of 2027 on its Horizon banking system core platform, Beatty said.
