NASHVILLE, Tenn. — KeyBank is working to automate as many risk controls as possible as threats continue to tick up.
“Over the last year, we shifted to looking at all of our controls in seeing how many of the controls we can automate or streamline,” Dominic Cugini, chief transformation officer at KeyBank, said at Bank Automation Summit U.S. 2024.

“Risk is getting harder, not easier,” he added.
Now, 60% of the $189 billion bank’s automation team is dedicated to risk control efforts, he said.
The allocation of effort toward risk controls supports the bank’s January appointment of Darrin Benhart as the bank’s chief risk officer, according to a KeyBank release.
Through the bank’s ongoing technology and automation efforts, “There’s not an area within KeyBank that doesn’t have some sort of automation at this point,” Cugini said, noting that was not the case just five years ago.
