PR: Michigan First Credit Union Expands Membership and Increases Transactions with Wincor Nixdorf ProCash ATMs

AUSTIN, Texas – June 15, 2011 – Wincor Nixdorf Inc., one of the world’s leading providers of IT solutions and services to retailers and retail banks, today announced that Michigan First Credit Union has increased its membership by 35,000 new members and tripled the number of transactions processed since implementing Wincor Nixdorf’s ProCash ATMs with Cash and Check Deposit Modules (CCDM) in 2004.

Wincor’s solution, which Michigan First branded as MoneyWorks Banking Centers, is installed at each branch. The MoneyWorks machines can handle approximately 320,000 transactions each month – nearly three times as many transactions as a teller can process. Since implementation in 2004, Michigan First has averaged more than 1,400 new members each month, growing from 50,000 to 87,000 members, while adding only five new branches.

“Without the Wincor Nixdorf ATMs, Michigan First would have needed many more branches to handle the increased volume,” said Michael Poulos, president and CEO of Michigan First Credit Union. “Member service is about more than greeting members with a smile and a hello – it’s about offering technology and services that fit their lifestyles and, ultimately, help achieve their financial goals.”

Michigan First has deployed 18 Wincor Nixdorf ProCash ATMs in eight branches since 2004. Wincor Nixdorf also provides comprehensive IT services for Michigan First’s installed ATMs to ensure reliability for its high transaction volumes.

“Our culture and commitment to service drove the decision to choose Wincor Nixdorf to expand our ATM fleet,” said Poulos. “Their innovative designs and usability, as well as the flexibility and security of their solutions, were exactly what we needed to continue improving our customer service and enhance our members’ experiences.”

Based in metropolitan Detroit, Michigan First has more than $580 million in assets and nine branches located in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne Counties. The credit union recently renovated its branches with new technology to improve efficiency and enhance the overall consumer experience. ATMs and software from Wincor Nixdorf were selected as part of this transition because Wincor Nixdorf was the only vendor able to supply the sophisticated technology necessary to allow Michigan First’s tellers to shift their focus to providing more diversified and increased member services.

“There is an inaccurate perception that self-service solutions can reduce the bank’s personal relationships with their customers,” said Alan Walsh, executive vice president, U.S. Banking Division. “In reality, self-service ATMs are critical to strengthening existing client relationships and attracting new members. Michigan First proves this point; offering envelope-free cash and check deposit and the option to select the denomination of withdrawals to their members has allowed employees to more effectively focus their efforts on customer service and membership growth – without increasing the number of branches.”

A recent survey conducted by Wincor Nixdorf revealed consumers prefer to use ATMs for their banking transactions. Seventy-four percent of respondents hope that one day their ATM will offer all of the functionality and services as their teller, and 88 percent of consumers would like to select the combination of note denominations for their ATM withdrawals.
