Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) will join Berlin-based Open Bank Project to hold a new hackathon in the fall.

Called Hack/Make the Bank, the event will be held in Edinburgh, Scotland, the weekend of Oct. 9.

The Open Bank Project (OBP) is best known for building an open-source API for banks for developers to use to build financial services products. Earlier this year, it conducted an API research project with Bank Innovation, the results of which are discussed here.

OBP describes a hackathon as “a creative marathon of brainstorming and software building in which working prototypes of web and mobile applications are quickly ‘hacked’ together by small teams of software engineers, designers and other innovators.” Copious amounts of pizza, as well as caffeine in various forms, will, of course, be provided.

Simon Redfern, CEO of Open Bank Project, said, “By experimenting with APIs and sourcing innovation outside of its wall, RBS is able to anticipate customer needs and demonstrates a leading position in open banking.”

The Open Bank Project has organized a number of hackathons with banks over the past few years, including with Rabobank, BNP Paribas, and RBS subsidiary Ulster Bank, in cities such as London, Paris, Berlin, and Barcelona.
