Jack Henry Associates (JHA) becomes the fourth core provider to partner with Bitcoin fintech NYDIG, the vendors announced today. NYDIG allows banking customers to buy, hold and sell — but not spend — Bitcoin.

Monett, Mo.-based Jack Henry — the second-largest core provider in the U.S. with 18.5% marketshare, according to data firm FI Navigator — is joining core providers Fiserv, FIS and Computer Services Inc. (CSI), to offer NYDIG’s service to its banking customers.

New York City-based NYDIG was founded in 2017 as the Bitcoin subsidiary of the holding company Stone Ridge. Both consumer and business accounts will be able to access NYDIG’s capabilities through the Banno digital banking platform, with real-time payments solution JHA PayCenter facilitating payments to and from NYDIG.

While there is consumer demand for Bitcoin, only about one in five Americans actually hold it, Rahm McDaniel, head of banking solutions at NYDIG, previously told Bank Automation News. However, nearly four out of five people say they would store their Bitcoin with their bank or credit union, and around 70% would switch financial institutions in order to do so, according to NYDIG.

“We really view this as an access problem and not a Bitcoin problem, meaning that when we look at research that we’ve seen, it tells us that about half those people would actually buy Bitcoin if they could get it from their credit banks and credit unions,” McDaniel said.
