Green Dot today announced it has selected The Temenos Banking Cloud platform to streamline its banking and payment services.

The $4.3 billion Green Dot operates as a “branchless bank” and offers its banking-as-a-service (BaaS) platform serving big-name partners like Walmart, Uber and Intuit. Founded in 1999, Green Dot built its name on its reloadable prepaid card business and offers a range of financial services products.

Within its banking services ecosystem, Pasadena, Calif.-based Green Dot notes that it offers consumers and businesses debit, prepaid, checking, credit and payroll cards as well as money processing, tax refunds, cash deposits and disbursements.

The Temenos Banking Cloud, which launched in May, will allow Green Dot and its partners to embed financial services like credit, payment, lending, and checking or savings accounts. Green Dot pointed to the platform’s efficiency, security and scalability in a release. More than 3,000 banks and financial institutions are running Temenos cloud-native banking software and software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions, including the $2.98 trillion HSBC and $1.6 trillion Credit Suisse.

The Temenos partnership will allow Green Dot to boost speed-to-market with new features, functionality and updates for its solutions, Alison Lubert, vice president of corporate communications at Green Dot, told Bank Automation News. Green Dot also expects The Temenos Banking Cloud will help grow its product set, making it easier to build and roll out new offerings for consumers and expand offerings to new groups like small and midsized businesses.

“Green Dot has experienced a lot of growth both through [mergers and acquisitions] as well as retail and organic expansion, and this will help us bring it all together on one streamlined, secure, consistent platform ― making platform management, support and updates far more efficient and consistent,” Lubert said.

Green Dot President and CEO Dan Henry mentioned GO2bank, the bank’s mobile app launched early this year, in today’s release, saying, “This is a critical component of our mission to seamlessly connect people to their money, both directly through our digital bank and products like GO2bank, and through our valued partners.”

The GO2bank app lets users open an account online with no minimum balance requirement. The account has no monthly fees if there is a payroll or government benefit direct deposit the prior month; otherwise, users pay a $5 monthly fee. The account also charges fees for cash deposits, debit card transfers, expedited check-cashing and out-of-network ATM withdrawals or balance inquiries.

GO2bank account users can also apply for a credit card with no annual fees and no credit check to apply, relying instead on direct deposits received in the GO2bank account, and a refundable security deposit of at least $100. The card is designed to “build or rebuild” credit, according to Green Dot, and cardholders have access to a monthly credit score.

“Green Dot continues to pioneer new ways to support underbanked Americans through its own financial products as well as its strategy to offer embedded finance through [BaaS] to the world’s leading brands,” Temenos CEO Max Chuard stated in the release. “Temenos’ intelligent, cloud-based open banking platform will drive innovation and growth as Green Dot continues to build out its ecosystem and grow its digital bank platform and customer base.”
