Canadian banking giant TD Bank Group announced last week that it is leveraging software company Databricks’ data analytics capabilities to support the migration of its big data sets to Microsoft Azure.

Databricks provides the bank with a range of data management and analytics tools, including machine learning and Delta Lake, a secure data storage platform. The solution runs through Microsoft Azure.
“We’re leveraging Databricks’ data science and engineering environment for our operational data pipelines,” Jeff Martin, senior vice president of corporate platforms at TD Bank Group, told Bank Automation News. “We’re also using Databricks’ machine learning for our data scientists and users. With that, they’re using an interactive notebook and building out advanced analytical models.”
While the $1.34 trillion USD bank already operates capabilities in a Microsoft Azure environment, the Databricks partnership helps accelerate the shift of the bank’s big data from on-premises to the cloud, which Martin said will “continue to grow.”
“We’ve loaded a third of our big data from on-premises into the environment and are continuing that over the next year, so it’s absolutely operational.” Martin said. “It will continue to grow as a data platform with an analytics engine, which is where Databricks fits, along with API [application program interface] enablement. That allows for new services to be based off richer and more complete data.”
The bank also announced that it will hire 2,000 technology workers over the coming year, with a focus on cloud computing, machine learning and automation to support its Azure shift.
“It’s really an exciting time to be at TD because of the investment, support and partnerships we have,” Martin said.
