Building trust with agentic commerce imminent

Industry leaders agree that large-scale agentic commerce is on the horizon, meaning FIs will need to establish guardrails and possibly restrict agent access to certain channels. Agentic commerce will follow the same course as other disruptors such as e-commerce and tap-to-pay, Visa Chief Executive Ryan McInerney said in July on the company’s fiscal third-quarter earnings call, starting with an early period of framework building. Digital bank BBVA and Visa completed their first AI agent-initiated transactions in June, and American Express announced an agentic insurance product in April, extending its card member backing to registered AI agents. “When you think about agentic commerce, you think about just how potentially fraught it is with not only fraud, but also with hallucinations that can occur,” CEO Stephen Squeri said on American Express’ Q2 earnings call. Possible solutions Therefore, e-commerce and payment platforms must be able to discern human users from nonhuman users, Jonathan Frost , director of global advisory at behavioral biometrics company BioCatch , told FinAi News . The next step will be determining if that agent has permission and authority to act. It might come down to blocking agents from certain channels that were designed to be used by humans, Frost said. For example, Amazon barred Muse, Meta ’s personal AI agent, from shopping on Amazon.com in September. Amazon said it blocked Muse because the agent does not identify itself when browsing and appears to record customer credentials, both of which violate Amazon’s conditions of use. “I would anticipate that the vast majority of financial institutions will not welcome, as indeed Amazon has not welcomed, bots that appear to behave on behalf of a customer,” Frost said. Responsibility However, at the end of the day, the liability for an incorrect or unauthorized transaction will rest with the customer, Edwin Mata , CEO and co-founder of asset tokenization platform Brickken , told FinAi News . While a user could try to blame the company that produced the AI or manages it, there are likely terms and conditions “that nobody reads” that say the responsibility and liability of using these tools lies with the user, Mata said. Therefore, users should continue to review transactions and not cede complete control to an agent, he said. “Who do you blame?” Mata said. “It's always the user of the AI tool because AI is still just a tool.” Also, the terms and conditions for most financial services organizations state that sharing your credentials with a third party, be they human or not, is prohibited, Frost added. By violating these terms, the user becomes responsible for most issues.
