Okta launches AI agent management capabilities

Identity and access management company Okta today launched several agentic AI capabilities to help customers manage risk with more visibility and control. “The more powerful agents get, the more risk they can potentially introduce into an enterprise,” President and Chief Operating Officer Eric Kelleher said in a Sept. 17 news conference. “Moving fast and hoping for the best is not a strategy, but neither is locking everything down." When implementing AI, companies must balance speed with security, he said. "Every connection you don't allow between an agent and your enterprise might also deny you an insight or automation or a capability or an entirely new way of doing business, and you risk being left behind by your competitors on the innovation front," Kelleher said. Okta works with many large FIs, including Bank of America , Citi and JPMorgan Chase , according to the San Francisco-based provider. Controlling AI agents Okta for AI Agents, Okta's SaaS launched for general availability in April to help organizations govern AI agents , today launched tools to enable better AI governance. "But, no matter where this technology heads, every enterprise will always be faced with the same four fundamental questions: Where are my agents? What can they do? What are they actually doing right now? And when something goes wrong, how do I respond?” To address these questions, Okta for AI Agents has: Extended shadow AI discovery, which allows organizations to find unmanaged agents running on employee devices; Enabled visual configuration of agent connections; and Enhanced its "kill switch" to revoke active tokens for agents, stopping a rogue or malfunctioning agent’s actions instantly. Blueprint Alliance formed Additionally, 12 companies, including Okta, today launched the Blueprint Alliance , a coalition to help organizations better operate AI agents. The other members are: Amazon Web Services ; CrowdStrike ; Databricks ; Docker ; Google Cloud ; Lovable ; Proofpoint ; Salesforce ; ServiceNow ; Wiz ; and Zscaler . GE Appliances and World Central Kitchen will serve as strategic advisers, according to a release today. "The risk of unsecured, ungoverned agents is fundamentally an industry problem, not a problem for one company," Kelleher said. "It requires an industry solution. "It's going to take all of us working together ... across every layer of the stack, from hyperscalers to data platforms, and SaaS providers to model companies, identity providers and security vendors," he said. As part of a commitment to deeper interoperability, members are building and testing cross-vendor signal-sharing to allow real-time alerts to be shared across connected systems. Also, members will publish their interoperability results and guidance on a regular basis, according to the release. “As AI agents rapidly scale across enterprise environments, organizations need the flexibility to connect best-of-breed identity, security and runtime solutions across heterogeneous stacks,” Abhi Sawant , vice president of engineering and platform security at Google Cloud, said in the release.
