Major AI providers Anthropic, OpenAI, Grok and Gemini experienced outages today, according to real-time outage monitor DownDetector.
Anthropic confirmed two incidents in a status update on its website today: A brief spike in errors on Claude Sonnet 5 that were resolved quickly and a longer disruption affecting several models, including Mythos/Fable 5.1,Opus 5 and Opus 4.8.
A company employee posted on social media that service had returned to normal within about two hours.
An infrastructure issue is causing a partial outage across Claude Code, the API, and https://t.co/JQms60I8iw. We’re working on it but don’t have an ETA yet. We’ll post here when that changes, and quickest place for updates is always https://t.co/ZyS6p0rEnb

Bank impact
Grasshopper Bank, for one, was affected by today’s outage, Peter Chapman, chief technology officer at Grasshopper, told FinAi News.
The outage reached a number of Grasshopper’s production AI tools, but none of them are mission-critical or customer-facing, Chapman said.
“We intentionally don’t have major systems that depend on a single LLM provider in that way,” Chapman said.
“We already work with multiple cloud AI providers we can shift load to, but an outage like today’s that hits providers across the board shows that strategy isn’t bullet proof.”
Resiliency plan
AI providers affected by an outage doesn’t automatically mean that the bank suffers an outage as well, Jeff McMillan, founder of consultancy McMillanAI and former head of firmwide AI at Morgan Stanley, told FinAi News.
“The consumer apps going down is not the same event as enterprise AI going down,” McMillan said. “Banks consume these models through API endpoints inside their cloud environments with provisioned capacity and redundancy.”
The plan is to treat model providers as critical third parties, which is a discipline banks already have, he said.
This discipline requires “an abstraction layer so you can swap models without rewriting the app, a contracted alternate provider, defined degraded-mode behavior per use case and a manual path that still works.”
Multicloud, multivendor and even multi-LLM approaches are not 100% effective, Ben Smith, senior partner and global lead in the digital and analytics practice at consultancy Kearney, told FinAi News.
“All major financial institutions are using a mix of models and model routers and frequently there are issues, much like when Microsoft goes down or AWS,” Smith said.
“Almost all of them are being served the models via a major hyperscaler for security and uptime reasons.”
A failure at one end point can create a cascading effect for the entire network to go down, he said.
At time of publishing the article, all major LLMs have fixed their outage issues, according to DownDetector and the status update pages of those LLMs.
